Lorin F. Wheelwright was born in Ogden, Utah on December 20, 1909. He earned a doctorate in music from Columbia, and worked at the Oswego State Teachers College in New York, in the Salt Lake City schools, and as head of the Coordinating Council of Higher Education for the state of Utah. The College of Fine Arts and Communications was founded in 1963 the following a reorganization of the College of Fine Arts. James A. Mason served as dean of the college until 1994, when he was succeeded by Bruce L. Christensen. Christensen was succeeded by Newell Dayley who was appointed dean in 2000 and served until 2003.
